How to Clean Leather Furniture

Cleaning leather furniture can bring it back to life. Find out how, with these easy tips.

Leather Furniture Tips and Care

Several years ago most people were not concerned with how to clean leather furniture. Back then, wealthy people were the only ones who could afford leather upholstered furniture. These pieces were usually big with a dark color and a high gloss shine. Most of the items had brass nails going through the front of the arms, and detailed button tufting. This day in age that is no longer the case. Manufacturers have made leather furniture more affordable, and convinced the average consumer that higher quality leather products are a better value than cloth or other upholstery. Now that it's popularity has soared, it is good to have a detailed guide on how to clean leather furniture.

There is no mistaking the benefits that come with leather upholstered merchandise. It is more durable and longer lasting than any other fabric covering. It will last up to 5 times longer as well. It  stands up against the sun and heat, is fire resistant, and with proper care will not peel or crack. It will hold its color fastness, and become soft and supple with age. It is wise to get as much information on the leather furniture that you are going to buy before making the purchase.

Arranging Living Room Furniture

Where you place your living room furniture is vital to ensure a long life. Any direct heat source should be avoided. These include fireplaces, radiators, and heating vents. There should be a 2 foot space between your piece and the source of heat.

Direct sunlight is also something you should avoid. This will cause the leather surface to fade and dry out. This will result in cracking of the leather over time. This is true for any type of furniture that you have.

When arranging living room furniture, place it out of the way of high traffic areas. People will walk past and rub up against the fabric as they pass. Over time this will leave marks in the material. Place the material at the end of the footbpath. This gives it more of an open look, while preserving it at the same time.

Leather Furniture Maintenance Plan

Weekly - Your leather furniture will benefit from being dusted once a week. this keeps dust particles from getting int o the pores. Use a soft cloth to wipe it. Although it can seem like a small deal, it goes makes a big difference in the long term care of your pieces.

Spot Cleaning - If you have an occasional spill of drinks or foods, use a damp cloth combined with a mild detergent soap. Liquid hand soap is a good choice.

Some stains will require a professional leather cleaner. These include urine, gum, ink spots, grease stains, or blood. Have the cleaner on hand so that you can take action immediately after the spill. This will help with the results.

Quarterly - A newly purchased couch or chair should be conditioned with a specially designed conditioner or protectant solution that penetrates deep into the leather to keep it moisturized. Once every four months use a leather conditioner as part of your leather furniture maintenance plan to keep the fabric soft and supple. Clean the furniture with a cleaner and apply the protectant afterwards. This will protect your it for many years.
